Second Star Wishes is an Authorized Disney Vacation Planner and U-Preferred Universal Parks and Resorts agency, and "How long are the lines?" is a question we hear every single day. This guide has a free live wait times tool for every ride at Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Universal Orlando, and Universal Studios Hollywood, plus how posted waits work, when lines are shortest, and the easiest ways to spend less of your vacation standing in line.

Wait Times Quick Facts

  1. When are lines shortest? In the first hour after the park opens and the last hour before it closes.

  2. Are posted wait times accurate? They're a good guide, but Disney's posted waits often run a little longer than the time you actually spend in line.

  3. Where do these wait times come from? They're the posted waits the parks share, collected by Queue-Times.com and refreshed throughout the day.

How Long Are the Lines Right Now? (Live Wait Times Tool)

Pick your resort and park in the free tool below to see the current posted wait for every open ride right now.

How to use it:

  • Pick your resort: Walt Disney World, Disneyland Resort, Universal Orlando, or Universal Hollywood.

  • Pick your park: all 4 Disney World parks, both Disneyland parks, all 3 Universal Orlando parks (including Epic Universe), and Universal Studios Hollywood.

  • Sort the rides: by area of the park, shortest wait first, or longest wait first.

  • Check the time stamp: the "Updated" line at the top shows when the times were last refreshed, in park time.

  • Closed rides: tap "Show closed rides and shows" to see what's down or not running right now.

TIP: Planning ahead from home? Check the tool at the same time of day you'll be in the park. A ride that's 20 minutes at 9 a.m. can easily be 70 minutes by 1 p.m.

How Do Theme Park Wait Times Work?

Each park posts an estimated wait at the entrance of every ride, and that's the number you see in the park's app and in our tool.

  • It's an estimate: the park guesses how long the line will take based on how many people are in it and how fast the ride loads.

  • Disney often rounds up: Disney's posted waits often run a little longer than the real wait, so a posted 45 minutes may move faster. Universal's tend to be closer.

  • Lightning Lane and Express are separate lines: posted waits are for the regular standby line. If you have Lightning Lane or Universal Express, your wait is usually much shorter.

  • "Walk on" means 0 to 5 minutes: when a ride shows little or no wait, you can usually walk right on.

  • "Closed" can mean a lot of things: the ride may be down for a short break, closed for weather, closed for refurbishment, or a show or character meet that isn't running right now. Rides that go down often reopen the same day.

TIP: If a big ride goes down while you're nearby, stay close and check the app. When it reopens, the line is often short for a few minutes.

When Are the Lines Shortest at Disney and Universal?

Lines are almost always shortest in the first hour after opening and the last hour before close, so plan your must-do rides for those times.

  • Be there before opening ("rope drop"): the first hour is the best time of the day for the biggest rides.

  • Use early entry if your hotel has it: Walt Disney World hotel guests get into the parks 30 minutes early with Early Theme Park Entry. Universal Orlando hotel guests can get Early Park Admission up to 1 hour early on select rides and dates. Disneyland Resort hotels ended early entry on January 5, 2026, and now give one free Lightning Lane entry instead.

  • Ride during parades, fireworks, and meals: crowds pile up along the parade route and at lunch (11:30 to 1:30), so ride lines often dip.

  • Stay for the last hour: lots of families head out early, especially with little ones.

  • Weather helps: a passing Florida rain shower clears out lines fast. Pack ponchos and keep riding (outdoor coasters may pause for lightning).

  • Time of year matters most: holidays, spring break, and summer are the busiest. Mid-January to early February, late August to September, and early December (before the holiday rush) tend to be lighter.

Early entry times and rides can change, so double-check before your trip. Universal lists current dates on its official Early Park Admission page, and Disney lists them in the My Disney Experience app.

How Can You Spend Less Time in Line?

The easiest way to spend less time in line is a smart day-by-day plan plus the right line-skipping option for your crew.

At Disney World and Disneyland

  • Lightning Lane Multi Pass: lets you book return times for several rides so you skip most of the standby line. Our Lightning Lane guide walks you through how and when to book.

  • Lightning Lane Single Pass: a one-time purchase for the very top rides that aren't on Multi Pass.

  • Lightning Lane Premier Pass: the priciest option, with one Lightning Lane entry per ride and no booking windows. See our Lightning Lane Premier Pass guide.

  • Single rider lines: a few rides have them. You won't sit together, but the wait is often much shorter.

At Universal Orlando and Universal Hollywood

  • Universal Express Pass: skips the regular line on most rides. Express Unlimited is included for guests at Hard Rock Hotel, Loews Royal Pacific Resort, and Loews Portofino Bay Hotel, good at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure (not Epic Universe).

  • Single rider lines: Universal has a lot of them, and they can cut your wait way down for teens and adults.

  • Universal Studios Hollywood: Universal Express is sold as a separate ticket upgrade.

For families with little ones

Rider Switch at Disney and Child Swap at Universal let grown-ups take turns without waiting in line twice. Our Ride Height Checker shows which rides your kids can do, so you know where you'll need it.

TIP: Book the rides with the longest posted waits first. Use this tool the week before your trip to see which rides run long at the times you'll be there.

Frequently Asked Questions About Disney and Universal Wait Times

How often do the wait times update?

Throughout the day. Check the "Updated" time at the top of the tool to see exactly when the times were last refreshed.

Are Disney's posted wait times accurate?

They're a good guide, but Disney's posted waits often run a little longer than the real wait. Universal's are usually closer to the actual time.

Which parks does the tool cover?

Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, Disneyland Park, Disney California Adventure, Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, Epic Universe, and Universal Studios Hollywood.

Why does a ride say Closed?

It may be down for a short break, closed for weather or refurbishment, or it's a show or character meet that isn't running right now. Many rides reopen the same day.

What time of day are Disney World lines shortest?

Right at park opening and in the last hour before close. Early Theme Park Entry gives Disney World hotel guests a 30-minute head start.

Does Disneyland still have early entry?

Not for hotel guests. Disneyland Resort hotels ended Early Theme Park Entry on January 5, 2026, and now include one free Lightning Lane entry during your stay instead.

Where do these wait times come from?

They're the posted waits the parks share, collected and shared with us by Queue-Times.com.
