How Do You Book Lightning Lane at Disney World?
You book Lightning Lane in the My Disney Experience app before your trip. Disney Resort hotel guests can book 7 days before their stay, for their whole trip (up to 14 days). Everyone else can book 3 days before their park day. You pick your rides and return times, pay, and then scan in at the Lightning Lane entrance during your window.
Lightning Lane Quick Facts
What happened to Genie+? In July 2024, Disney renamed Genie+ to Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Individual Lightning Lane to Lightning Lane Single Pass, and let guests book before their trip.
Is Lightning Lane free? No. All Lightning Lane passes cost extra, and prices change by park and date.
Do you need Lightning Lane at Disney World? Not always, but on busy days it can save hours of waiting.

What Is Lightning Lane at Disney World?
Lightning Lane is Disney's paid line-skipping system. Instead of waiting in the regular standby line, you get a return time (an "arrival window") and use a separate, much shorter line. There are three types:

Lightning Lane Multi Pass: for many popular rides, booked a few at a time.
Lightning Lane Single Pass: for the most in-demand rides, bought one at a time.
Lightning Lane Premier Pass: one-time access to every Lightning Lane ride in one park for one day.
How Does Lightning Lane Multi Pass Work?
With Lightning Lane Multi Pass, you choose up to 3 rides and arrival windows in one park before your visit. After you use one, you can pick another (if times are available), and keep going all day.
Price: changes by park and date, per person, per day.
Park Hopper: if your ticket includes Park Hopper, you can pick Multi Pass rides in a second park later in the day.
Best for: families who want shorter waits on lots of popular rides without paying the Premier Pass price.
How Does Lightning Lane Single Pass Work?
Lightning Lane Single Pass lets you buy a Lightning Lane return time for one of Disney's most in-demand rides, like TRON Lightcycle / Run, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, or Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. You can buy up to 2 per day, and the price depends on the ride and date.
TIP: Single Pass rides are NOT included in Multi Pass. If a headliner is a must for your family, plan for Single Pass separately.
What Is the Lightning Lane Premier Pass?
The Premier Pass gives you one entry to every Lightning Lane ride in one park, including Single Pass rides, with no return times to book. It's the most expensive option, and quantities are limited. Our Is the Lightning Lane Premier Pass Worth It? guide covers prices and when it's worth it.
When Can You Book Lightning Lane?
Your booking window depends on where you're staying:
Disney Resort hotel guests (and select partner hotels like the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin and Shades of Green): 7 days before your stay, for up to 14 days of your trip.
Everyone else: 3 days before your park day (or 3 days before the first day of your ticket).
Here's the part that trips people up: resort guests get a big head start. By the time off-site guests can book, the best times on popular rides may already be gone. That's one of the biggest perks of staying at a Disney Resort hotel.
What Mistakes Do People Make With Lightning Lane?
A few common slip ups we see:
Missing the booking window. The best times go fast, so book the moment your window opens.
Booking rides in a random order. Your return times should work with your park plan, not have you crisscrossing the park all day.
Forgetting Single Pass rides aren't in Multi Pass. Headliners like TRON need their own purchase.
Buying Lightning Lane for rides with short waits. Use it on the rides that actually have long lines.
Frequently Asked Questions About Lightning Lane
Can you buy Lightning Lane once you're in the park?
Yes, if it hasn't sold out. But booking ahead gets you better return times.
Does every ride have a Lightning Lane?
No. Only participating rides do, and Disney can change the list.
Is Lightning Lane worth it for a first Disney trip?
For most first-time families, yes, at least on the busiest parks and days. It's one of the easiest ways to cut your wait times.
Does Disneyland use the same Lightning Lane system?
Disneyland uses the same pass names, but how you buy and book them works a little differently.
