How Do You Make Disney Character Meet and Greets Magical?

Ask the character a question about their own story. A simple, personal question (like asking Belle what she's reading) turns a 30-second photo stop into a real conversation your family will remember. Dressing the part and bringing a fun prop helps too.

Meeting Disney characters is one of the most magical parts of a park day. And a little prep makes those moments feel more real and a lot less awkward.

Character Meet and Greet Quick Facts

  • Can all Disney characters talk? No. Princesses and other "face characters" talk. Mickey, Goofy, and other costumed characters don't, but they're super expressive.

  • Do you need Lightning Lane for characters? Usually not. Some character meets are included in Lightning Lane, but most use a regular line.

  • Can you hug Disney characters? Usually yes, but always ask first and follow the character's lead.

What Are the Two Types of Disney Characters?

Disney characters come in two types, and knowing which one you're meeting helps you plan your moment:

  • Face characters: characters like princesses and princes whose faces you can see. They talk and love a good conversation.

  • Costumed characters: characters like Mickey Mouse and Goofy, who wear full costumes. They don't speak, but they communicate with big gestures, dancing, and body language.

What Should You Say to Disney Princesses and Face Characters?

Ask about something from their story. These questions show you know their world, and the characters love playing along:

Disney princess and face character meet and greet tips
  • Ariel: "How many thingamabobs do you have now?"

  • Belle: "What book are you reading right now?"

  • Elsa: "Do you still love living in the Enchanted Forest?"

  • Anna: "How's Olaf doing these days?"

  • Rapunzel: "Have you painted any new murals lately?"

  • Jasmine: "Have you been on any magic carpet rides lately?"

  • Tiana: "Cooked any good recipes lately?"

  • Alice: "When was your last tea party with the Mad Hatter?"

  • Snow White: "How are your forest friends doing?"

Any time you make a real connection, the meet feels more authentic and a lot less awkward.

How Do You Interact With Mickey and Other Costumed Characters?

Costumed characters don't talk, but they're expressive and love to play. Try these:

Mickey Mouse and friends costumed character meet and greet tips
  • Mickey Mouse: Ask, "Where's Minnie today?" or go for a high-five. Show off your outfit and ask if you're "Minnie-approved" (bonus points for polka dots or bows!).

  • Donald Duck: Tell him he's number one...he'll love it.

  • Daisy Duck: Ask her to strike a modeling pose with you.

  • Goofy: Ask him to show you his favorite dance.

  • Pluto: Pretend to throw a ball and watch him react.

  • Edna Mode: Tell her she looks "fabulous, darling."

What Are the Best Tips for Disney Character Photos?

A few simple things make a big difference:

Disney character photo tips
  • Dress the part. Wearing something tied to the character sparks a conversation and makes the cutest photo.

  • Bring a prop. An autograph book, ears, a hat, or a themed bag gives the character something to play with.

  • Be enthusiastic. Characters respond to guests who are excited and engaged.

  • Respect boundaries. Ask before hugging and give the character performers their personal space. With little ones this can vary...just do your best.

TIP: Character meals are one of the easiest ways to meet lots of characters without waiting in lines. Your Travel Specialist can book them for you the moment dining reservations open, 60 days before your visit.
